Oak galls occur when female wasps inject their eggs into oak trees. The trees react by creating galls which provide the eggs with food and shelter facilitating their metamorphosis into adult wasps. Iron gall ink is made with oak galls and was used for drawings and manuscripts during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. I foraged these oak galls while hiking in Griffith Park, Simi Valley, and the Verdugo Mountains in Burbank and Glendale.
