This video explores time, silence, chance, and a process of technological transformation. An audio file (mp3) containing one second of silence was duplicated 900 times equaling 15 minutes of time and placed on a folder labeled “900 mp3 files” on a desktop. All 900 files are selected and opened using the TextEdit application. Each file containing one second of silence is visually represented on the screen as a window containing textual and numerical data. The speed at which the files are opened is determined by the processing capabilities of the computer, which slows down considerably over time. Once all 900 files are opened, the mouse pointer quits the TextEdit application. Several seconds later, a chance occurrence takes place where the textual and numerical data inside the windows disappears but their black, empty, ghostly frames are left on screen. In an instant, the accumulation of black frames disappear. The video ends with the mouse pointer closing the window for the folder.
