Oak galls occur when a female wasp injects its eggs into an oak tree. The tree reacts by creating the gall which provides the egg with food and shelter and allows it to metamorphose into an adult wasp. Iron gall ink is made with oak galls and was used to write manuscripts during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. I foraged these oak galls while hiking in the Verdugo Mountains in Burbank and Glendale, Simi Valley, and Griffith Park.
